Who is St. Leger Cowley?

St. Leger Cowley was a native of Ireland and came to America before 1769, accompanied by his wife and two sons. The family first settled at  Greenbush (Schoharie County), New York, where he trapped and fur-traded with the Native Americans. Later St. Leger Cowley moved his family (some miles southwest) to Delaware County, New York. During the Revolutionary War, he held a commission as a barracks master at Albany, New York. St. Leger Cowley and his two sons, Samuel and Jonathan, were members of the Fifth Regiment of New York and served under Colonel Harper. St. Leger Cowley was commissioned adjutant, a position which he held until the close of the war. He died in 1797 and was buried in a family cemetery at Stamford, Delaware County, New York. His grave was marked with a plain fieldstone.

How the Chapter received its name?

Mrs. Jeanette Davis Ward was born in 1873 in Logansport, Indiana. She is a descendant of St. Leger Cowley himself. During her term as State Regent, Mrs. Ward organized four new chapters: St. Leger Cowley, Niobrara, Otoe, and Major Issac Sadler. She served as regent of the St. Leger Cowley Chapter from 1909-1911. In 1921 she moved to Granite, Oklahoma, where she became a member of the Hobart Chapter in Oklahoma. She died October 16, 1946, and is buried in Granite City Cemetery, Granite City, Oklahoma. Her grave has a DAR Marker. Her National number is 19326.
