The name "Quivera" was selected because of its historical significance. Francisco Coronado and his Spanish band set out to find the city of untold wealth. They landed on Mexican shores and went up through Arizona and Colorado and then into Nebraska. One proof that they were in Nebraska is that they spoke of the Sioux Indians. On arriving in Nebraska, Coronado allegedly exclaimed, "Good tidings, Quivera lies at hand." Quivera means "untold wealth."
