Point Of Rock Chapter was named for a small cliff about fifteen miles northwest of the town of Alliance. The point could be seen for many miles in either direction, and near the point were cool springs of water. It was a part of the Sidney - Black Hills Trail that took a north-northwesterly route from Sidney, Nebraska, to the Black Hills of South Dakota. It became a landmark and a stopping place for immigrant wagons going west.
